I have about 4 years to wait before I become eligible to begin collecting Social Security payments. I kid around with my fellow employees telling them that when I walk up to the window to apply. the window will slam shut with the notice on it saying "out of business".
We all have a good laugh. But with Alan Greenspan, Fed Chairman, coming out and saying that payments to retirees should be cut back in order to help pay for the deficit, the laughter is turning into anger.
I have been contributing to Social Security now for over forty years, and I do not appreciate hearing a high profile appointee of this or any other Administration even suggesting that those of us who are getting close to retirement will not be getting what is due them.
During the Reagan Administration, Social Security was reformed. We working people were promised that the Social Security system was on solid footing for many decades to come, and we could depend on it when our time came. In fact it was only four years ago, during the 2000 election, when we were told that Social Security was safe and sound in a "lock box," and would not be touched for any reason.
With Mr. Greenspan's announcement, are we to believe that this is no longer the case? Are we now being given notice through Mr. Greenspan's remarks that millions of us "baby boomers' are going to get the shaft? I hope not. But if this is true we older Americans will be the victims of one of the biggest criminal scams ever perpetrated on this planet.
We now have to give up a lifetime of investment in the Social Security system to pay for the gross failure and mismanagement of a Government whose interests are no longer that of the American people, but that of powerful lobbies and special interest groups? We, who have kept the faith and served our country, who have ceaselessly toiled for an entire lifetime, will now have to consider living in the street?
I say no! It is not the everyday hard-working men and women whose policies are bankrupting the country, and plunging it into war. No, it is the leadership which has failed the people. Do not let these government crooks and their corporate handlers off the hook. Demand what is coming to you!
