I love dictionaries. Specifically, I love the Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary Tenth Edition. This is my weapon of choice. This also would be an endorsement I suppose. With the possible exception of the Oxford Dictionary, you know the great big one that is nearly impossible to lift, let alone have one on your desk, Merriam Webster’s is the one to have and use and give endorsements for. Here is a word and a definition...
Semite \’se-,mit, esp Brit ‘se,mit\n
1a: a member of any of a number of peoples of ancient southwestern Asia including the Akkadians, Phoenicians, Hebrews, and Arabs b: a descendant of these peoples
Did you catch the connection between Hebrews and Arabs? They are both Semitic peoples.
By definition and accepted anthropological premise, they are one and the same people. Isn’t that just a fat fly in the ointment?
So, what we have here is a family feud. The A branch of the Semitic people hate and despise and try to kill the J branch of the Semitic people and the entire rest of the world gets dragged into their little feud. The J branch of the Semitic people are also in the process of hating, killing, despising, and dragging the rest of the world into their little feud and, here in a nutshell is our world at the beginning of the 21st century.
The Bible brings this feud into some perspective. The patriarch Abraham was getting really old and we’ll skip all of the begets part and the promises part, and we’ll get to the intrigue. Abraham’s wife Sara figures, time is just about up on the biological clock and Sara has her maid, Hagar, go in unto Abraham for a little on the side action. Hagar gives Abraham a son and his name is Ishmael.
Then, we’ll speed up the story, Sara gets pregnant and gives Abraham a son and, we have us a problem, Houston. Sara decides that this is a serious error and gives Hagar and Ishmael the boot. See ya, wouldn’t want to be ya!
Sara has no idea just how big a problem this will grow to be. Please note, Ishmael and Israel are very similar in lexicography. So, these two very different sides of the same family are dealing with some really old and deep seated issues.
Literally, this has been going on for thousands of years. One can really cultivate some deep seated hatred over thousands of years. Especially if it involves a father and two mothers and two brothers and getting the boot because one mother decides the other mother and her son must really go. Jerry Springer could have a field day with this one.
Now I am going to throw in some theological controversy. The Jews and the Christians and the Muslims all worship one god. Near as I can tell, it is the same god. Not being privy to the mind of god, I am guessing here.
The Christians believe that god is a trinity. I will not be pulled into theological mathematics, I am just fleshing out a polemic. The Christians believe that there is god the father, god the son, and god the holy ghost. It is still all the same one god. Okay, are you confused yet? The Jews believe only in one god. The Muslims believe only in one god. Still all the same god as the Christians believe and so, we have controversy.
Now, I fully understand that I have just angered all of the devout believers in the world. Please stay with me for just another moment. The Jews hate the Christians and the Muslims for what they believe. The Christians hate the Jews and the Muslims for what they believe. The Muslims hate the Jews and the Christians for what they believe.
Now for some really hot controversy. The triune god breaks down like this, the Jews get god the father and the Christians get god the son and the Muslims get god the holy ghost. All three of these religions worship the same god and they all have some tricky little details of faith and theological definitions and they all refuse to get along so, I have just solved their problem. Instead of hating each other, they can all just hate me for bringing to light this theological phenomena. Presto, was that some brilliant theological breakdown or what?
21st century politics and religion are as counterproductive as anything that the planet has ever produced. This combination is a sure fire gimmick to spark wars, violence, prejudice, hate, ethnic cleansing, and political expedience. Caught in the crosshairs of social today, we find Israel, Palestine, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and for the most part the entire rest of the world.
I am going to single out Israel and only for the purpose of being accused of being ‘anti-Semitic’. Israel is in the process of waging apartheid on the Palestinian people. Israel receives a lot of criticism for their policies. It is deserved.
I have made NO mention of Jews. I have criticized the Israeli government, for certain. For anyone in politics or out of politics or just about anywhere else, to criticize Israel is to be accused of being anti-Semitic.
You will never hear the same criticism of anyone that denigrates the Arab or Palestinian people. Remember the Semite definition? If you criticize Arab people or Palestinian people, by definition you are anti-Semitic. If you denigrate the Muslim people for their religious beliefs, you are being anti-Semitic.
Did you hear that, General Boykin? Did you hear that, Jerry Falwell? How about you Pat Robertson? You are as anti-Semitic as anyone you accuse of doing the very thing that you do on a regular basis.
How about you, all of the noble and true spirited members of the United States Senate. You criticize Arab people or Muslim people and you are anti-Semitic. Tom Delay, this applies to you as well. So, my fine Congressional delegates, consider that before you start legislation that protects Israel and academia from ‘anti-Semitism’ or before you authorize anymore wars for George Bush, remember that what you are doing is, anti-Semitic.
It is just awful when the shoe is on the other foot. Feet are by nature lefts and rights. Shoes are by nature lefts and rights. All of this has absolutely nothing to do with feet or shoes.
It is however, all about political expedience and elections and senatorial hypocrisy and presidential hypocrisy and presidential preemptive wars. Bush’s preemptive war on Iraq, is about as anti-Semitic as it gets. President George W. Bush is anti-Semitic and, doesn’t that just figure.
