Why the little-known news is the most important by Herb Ruhs, MD, June 26, 2005 In a time of great evil, such as ours, all the "big" stories are bogus. The only news that is fit to digest is the little noticed, the virtually unknown news that seeps through the cracks inadvertently. Therefore, I call your attention to the little story about Monsanto's GMO corn that has been revealed to be likely poisonous to mammals, and therefore, presumably to us human mammals as well. All the really newsworthy facets of this problem have been ignored, drowned out by "infotainment," or propagandized into oblivion. The basic facts have been revealed (see Secret Monsanto research shows health damage in rats fed Franken-corn, A potentially dangerous GMO is sold in Canada) if also effectively suppressed by the mass media. The facts are little threat to Monsanto since a fairly sophisticated scientific issue is being addressed and, therefore, "the facts" are likely to have little or no effect on the general public that has been prepared to be scientifically ignorant. No need to drag out the "big lie" artillery for this one. But some sober reflection on the implications of this one little story raises monumental implications. If GMO corn can cause big problems for rodents it can cause bigger problems for people, and you do not want to unknowingly participate in an uncontrolled mass experiment by consuming it. First off, there is no, I repeat, NO independent testing done on the toxicologic effects of GMO's. The research is all legally considered the secret property of the companies. Companies can, and do, avoid looking for adverse outcomes, or, if found, simply hide them. The only reason this scandal received any press at all is that a German court demanded the research from Monsanto as evidence in a minor court case, and the raw data of the study got out and could be evaluated by independent scientists. Implication #1: All research reports of work controlled by the industry about GMOs must be considered unreliable, if not patently false. No distribution of GMOs should be allowed until thorough, INDEPENDENT research firmly establishes their safety at some point far in the future. It is not just the general public that is in the dark here. The experts are being kept as blind as we are. Second, this is just one report about one GMO from a corporate system that expends a lot of money and energy to keep their research secret. Implication #2: There are certainly other, probably worse research results on corn and other GMO products that have yet to be revealed. It is not the part of the ice berg that you see that is dangerous. Third, governmental agencies in the US and around the world are eager to help the Monsantos of the world at the expense of their own populations. Implication #3: The term "government," in most cases, is a sham. Any real government would be alert and suspicious of newly engineered food stuffs. There is no evidence that world governments, including those in Europe, are acting in any concerted way to seriously frustrate the evil plans of the giant multinationals like Monsanto. As Jesus said, "Place not your faith in governments of men." Do not trust your government when it says something is safe. Be incredibly skeptical about what you decide to believe from governmental "scientific" sources that are controlled by moneyed interests. Fourth, this is the sort of problem that tends to sneak up on people and by the time the public is set to act in self defense, it is too late. The illegitimate money has been made, the payoffs paid, the records destroyed and we are left wondering, once again, what hit us. Implication #4: Marketing of potentially dangerous products that are the result of secret chemical and food research needs to be considered a potential crime of mass murder in progress. People who have any interest in having their children and grandchildren survive had better demand transparency now, and also demand that an international "truth commission" be set up to investigate the marketing of dangerous products, with the power to jail executives and scientist that participated in proven crimes, so insider witnesses will have an incentive to rat out their coconspirators. Fifth, Monsanto, and all the other big corporations found to be fostering ANY criminal conspiracies, need to be stopped in their tracks. Implication #5: Once a company has committed crimes against populations they must be presumed to be dangerous associations of mass murdering criminals and effectively stopped, taken over by accountable public agencies, and thoroughly investigated. No more accepting "oh, sorry, we are innocent and we won't do it any more." Criminals should not be in business. Sixth, there is enormous power concentrated in the hands of the multinationals. We can not expect that yesterdays measures will be adequate to deal with this combination of forces. Implication: all the organized, especially membership based, efforts at reform of the current system will be useless at effecting change. Any attempted control measures must not leave individuals with responsibility for action. Such concentrated power can easily manipulate, through bribes or threats, any individual or group of individuals setting out to deal with their crimes. Implication #6: Decentralized mass protest must force governments to take effective action against multinationals AS A GROUP. The world can not survive such concentrations of power, in search of profit, acting in secret. We have to be ready to just stop all organizations with the power to commit mass criminal acts. Multinational capitalism is a world killing disease. The "legal" structures that "permit" this activity are invalid on their face as no one, much less the entire population of a planet, can be considered to be legally bound to participate in its own destruction. The people getting together to save themselves? It only seems impossible because we haven't done it yet. We stopped cannibalism. We stopped the slave trade (mostly). We can stop unrestricted multinational gangster capitalism. No point in thinking that we can not, for, if in fact we can not do this, then the question of what else to do is moot, for we will not survive as a species from the accumulating effects of these mass scale crimes. Think positively. Talk to your neighbor about your shared concerns with this sort of thing. Stop believing that you must quietly put up with this sort of crap. Focus on real rather than perceived threats fostered by propaganda. herb
