System of privilege expands in scope and overall power by Herb Ruhs, MD, July 20, 2005 [Re Seeking less information] Hence the Achilles heel of privilege emerges. Incapable people end up silting up both ends of the operation. At the top it is impolite to question the qualifications of office holders much beyond their social connections; at the bottom positions tend to be filled with non-threatening incompetents. As the system of privilege expands in scope and overall power, it becomes progressively more rotten within, and eventually, and often suddenly, dies as a result of its success. In the past such weakened systems were devoured by new, stronger, more vital systems, but with much destruction and displacement. The best source on this process is Freddy Perlman's book Against His Story Against Leviathon (a mandatory read). We have reached the end of the spin cycle of our current social machine. Now we have a world wide system of incompetence at the top and the bottom and an earth that can not sustain any more destruction. Unless the fully-formed adults figure out how to take control back from the violent children selected by the current system, we will all be toast. Any system that segregates people into homogeneous groups that serve as machine like parts in the system will succumb. Any successful, and sustainable social system needs to fully integrate all available talents and levels of "intelligence" in every working group in order to be fully functional and adaptive to change. Of necessity this kind of organization needs to be done on a smaller scale than nation-states as strength also depends on fully developed relationships within the group. The book Tipping Point (the book is lame, the research presented is fine) examines the problem of scale in social organization and the hazards of large scale organization convincingly. Homogeneity is hopelessness. Integration and inclusion is health. Small scale is more survivable than large, baring large scale warfare. Herb Ruhs, MD
