Abstinence classes don't stop sex| | Excerpt: Students who took part in sexual abstinence programs were just as likely to have sex as those who did not, according to a study ordered by Congress.
Also, those who attended one of the four abstinence classes that were reviewed reported having similar numbers of sexual partners as those who did not attend the classes. And they first had sex at about the same age as other students -- 14.9 years, according to Mathematica Policy Research Inc. |

Former White House aide defends climate lying| | Excerpt: A former White House aide has defended editing government reports on global climate change to put them in line with the views of the Bush administration. Phil Cooney, former chief of staff of the White House's Council on Environmental Quality, said this was part of the normal review process. A former lobbyist for the American Petroleum Institute, Cooney now works for oil company ExxonMobil.
Cheney's office involved in global warming manipulation
Excerpt: ... the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee's hearing into Philip Cooney's editing of global warming reports revealed that Cheney's office also played a role. Kevin O'Donovan, an aide in Cheney's office, wrote a memo to Cooney suggesting they try to "reinvigorate debate on the actual climate history of the past thousand years." |

Cheney: 'There does not appear to be a consensus' that global warming is 'caused by man'| | Excerpt: Continuing the Bush administration's long resistance to the science of global warming, Vice President Dick Cheney said today a consensus is lacking on whether global warming is caused by human activity. |

HMO complicit in murder by medical neglect and depraved indifference
| | Excerpt: An even bigger story that also remains uncovered, is that this murderous approach has become so routine as to be unremarkable, merely "business as usual" for our medical care extortion system. |

New publishing rules restrict US scientists| | Comment: High-level muckymucks in the Bush-Cheney administration say they need prior review of scientific research to "improve scientists' accountability" and "harmonize" and "improve our product flow". Helen & Harry PERMANENT LINK |

1959 nuclear meltdown in California may have caused hundreds of cancers| | Excerpt: The lab's former owner, Rocketdyne, has said for years that no significant radiation was released. But the independent advisory panel said the incident released nearly 459 times more radiation than a similar one at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island in 1979. |
Sept. 25, 2006:
The end is at hand by Herb Ruhs, MD, Unknown News
| | Excerpt: I expect that the first challenge we face is to learn how to deal effectively with those people amongst us that cling to fatalistic delusions of superiority. A functional, survivable human family needs to come to see dominator thinking, attitudes of class privilege, fantasies of inherited superiority and worthiness, as the mass mental illness that it is. |
Sept. 20, 2006:
Scientists ask ExxonMobil to stop lying about climate change| | Excerpt: Britain's leading scientists have challenged the US oil company ExxonMobil to stop funding groups that attempt to undermine the scientific consensus on climate change.
In an unprecedented step, the Royal Society, Britain's premier scientific academy, has written to the oil giant to demand that the company withdraws support for dozens of groups that have "misrepresented the science of climate change by outright denial of the evidence".
The scientists also strongly criticise the company's public statements on global warming, which they describe as "inaccurate and misleading". |

When spinach becomes a matter of life and death
by Herb Ruhs, MD, Unknown News
| | Excerpt: All I had to endure was being awakened suddenly in the night with a warm sensation in the nether regions as my bowels emptied spontaneously, a day of fever, malaise and anorexia, some residual gastrointestinal discomfort, and a lingering fear of anything labeled "organic."
And what about consequences for the people who did this to me, and countless others more severely afflicted? Nothing. A few lawsuits to settle by the insurance company perhaps just a cost of doing evil business. |

Senate Republicans to 9/11 rescue workers: Drop dead| | Comment: A paltry $5,800 per year for sickened first responders and Republicans say it's too much.

Sept. 7, 2006:
New strain of deadly, drug-resistant tuberculosis evolves in South Africa| | Comment: Africa is a serious threat to human life on Planet Earth.
The populations of many African countries suffer from nonexistent to negligible health care, and many of the most foul diseases known to mankind are not only flourishing there but are evolving into newer, more virulent forms. High birth rates and extremely high AIDS rates, weakening peoples' immune defenses, only make matters worse.
Africa is basically an enormous stationary biological weapons laboratory. And with rapid air travel across the globe, it is only a matter of time before the next deadly epidemic evolves there and strikes all of us on Earth.
In my view, the problems of Africa are our problems too. The threat from diseases evolving in Africa is far more dangerous than the threat of Islamic terrorism and not far behind the threat of American NeoCon/Evangelical Rapturists (who favor WWIII on ideological and theological grounds.)
In addition, we must view the problems of terrorism and Africa the same way. They cannot be dealt with fought as wars, but with sophisticated, intelligence and wisdom that takes into account root causes. Mr. Chuckles PERMANENT LINK |

70% of 9/11 rescue workers have respiratory problems| | Excerpt: Five years after Sept. 11, seven out of 10 first responders and workers who toiled at Ground Zero suffer from chronic lung ailments that probably will be lifelong, doctors said yesterday in announcing the largest-ever study of 9/11 health effects... Doctors at Mount Sinai also said they expect to find cancer among the study's participants in coming years.
Comment: It would be an appropriate gesture, commemorating five years since September 11, 2001, to finally, finally take care of the rescue workers.
Appropriate, but unlikely.
The Bush-Cheney administration uses the rescue workers' heroism for photo ops and propaganda, but when it comes to the heroes' health, White House policy is, You're screwed. Helen & Harry Highwater PERMANENT LINK |

Global warming crisis worse than previously thought| | Excerpt: As the Earth warms, greenhouse gases once stuck in the long-frozen soil are bubbling into the atmosphere in much larger amounts than previously anticipated, according to a study in Thursday's journal Nature. |
Sept. 5, 2006:
Schwarzenegger vetoes universal health care| | Excerpt: The Republican governor said the single-payer system proposed by Sen. Sheila Kuehl would "cost the state billions and lead to significant new taxes on individuals and businesses, without solving the critical issue of affordability.
"I won't jeopardize the economy of our state for such a purpose," the governor said in a statement.
Kuehl, D-Santa Monica, said Schwarzenegger's comments indicated he "has not read the bill, doesn't understand the bill or is being completely misdirected by his handlers." She said the measure would save money.
"Where there are no cost controls at all now, and enormous administrative overhead and profit for insurance companies, there would have been a transparent system that actually would succeed in making health care coverage affordable in California," she said in a statement issued Tuesday. |
Aug. 30, 2006:
47 million Americans without health insurance includes workers, children| | Summary: The most recent increase in the uninsured includes a dramatic increase in children without health insurance, mostly because state-run insurance programs are no longer doing outreach to make sure all eligible children get enrolled. The other group that saw a decrease in insurance coverage are employees covered by employer-sponsored insurance. Four years ago, 62.6% of Americans who worked full time got insurance through their employer. That number has fallen to 59.5% in just four years. |

FDA approves adding viruses to food| | Excerpt: The combination of six viruses is designed to be sprayed on ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, including sliced ham and turkey, said John Vazzana, president and chief executive officer of manufacturer Intralytix Inc.
Comment: Okay, there are a couple problems with this besides the obvious one of letting companies add viruses to our food!
First of all, the viruses are meant to kill harmful bacteria, but they are prepared in a solution of the bacteria they are supposed to be killing, and some of that bacteria may very well make its way onto the food. "Tests" found that this didn't happen, but until I find out who did those tests, I have no faith in this at all.
The other problem is that viruses constantly evolve. This is why we need a new flu vaccine every year, and why everyone is freaking out about a "bird flu" even though right now it can only be spread directly from birds to people. When these viruses in our meat evolve, we might not know it until millions of people get sick from their lunch meat all at once.
It's a pandemic waiting to happen, but it's cheaper than keeping the bacteria off the food in the first place, so the food industry thinks it's a great idea, and that's good enough for the FDA.
And as an extra added bonus, companies will not have to label food that has viruses added to it, for obvious reasons.

"I have to imagine there are larger financial motivations here." |

Bush executive order let EPA bury info on 9/11 health hazards| | Excerpt: With New Yorkers already fuming about reports that the feds downplayed the danger of Ground Zero dust, the White House gave EPA chief Christie Whitman the power to bury embarrassing documents by classifying them "secret."

If you think about it, we don't actually have a health care crisis, or any other "crisis" for that matter. What we have is a financial and managerial class that has shifted all the weight onto the backs of those least able to defend themselves in this system, and all the wealth into their pockets.
When you step back and take a more comprehensive look at these various "crises" there is only one central, organizing crisis, a crisis of leadership that extends from the White House to your local Chamber of Commerce.

By ignoring global climate change for so many years, we've now reached the point where the changes in weather are becoming obvious to anyone. In more than a century of weather records, 2006 is the hottest year ever.
But the Bush-Cheney administration's response is to muzzle scientists, have political appointees rewrite science findings, and eliminate the budget for monitoring climate change. And now, remove earth entirely from NASA scientists' purview.
You no longer need to read science journals to understand global warming, just understand this: Unless they bring scuba gear, your grandchildren will never see Venice or Miami, or Manhattan, or San Francisco.
And still, the Bush-Cheney administration turns their backs on the problem, and pretends it isn't a problem at all.
